Any one have any ideas about health risks on the Cote d ivorie particularrily Benin please?

Have been planning trip with lady friend to Cotonou and Porto Nova but need reassurances about the health risks, ie Maleria, Hiv/Aids, apparently there is quite a high risk of Hiv there even from cuts etc .also after the very bad floods a few weeks ago so is it true Typhoid etc could be on the rampage.? I would be vwery greatfull if you can also direct me to any sites or information agencies where I can get more advice from . Also are there any restictions with the authorities on night life. I have been told this can be a problem for Caucasians from UK ?

tse tse fly, malaria, cholera, tuberculosis, malaria, typhoid fever, some nasty parasites, I wouldn't set foot in Africa myself but go ahead if you want to.

Cote d'ivorie as with much of west Africa has a high HIV populace, and precauition, especially if sexual activty would be recommended. If your just going on holiday , with no sexual activity then the risk of HIV transmission is relatively low.
Malaria is seen in Ivory Coast and malarial phrophalaxsis would be recommended.

You definately need to go to a travel clinic (your GP can arrange this easily) to discuss vaccinations and anti-malarial prophylaxis. Ideally this should be at least 6 weeks before travelling. Expect to be at the clinic for around an hour...they ask a lot of questions!

Yes, HIV is very prevalent in sub-saharan Africa, but you can make sure you are protecting yourself by avoiding unprotected sexual contact. Depending on where you are travelling, some travel-medicine specialists suggest taking your own supply of needles and syringes etc just in the unusual event of needing hospital treatment. This should not be necessary unless you are going off the beaten-track.

Best advice about night life is to check the foreign-office website....they have up-to-date advice re the security risks of all countries.
