my mom is not HIV positive and im not dumping my boyfriend and its rude to say that he is cheating on me. thank you for everything everyone very helpful and i shall ask my boyfriend to go with me when he gets here...

People can only be born with HIV if their mother was carrying it while you were in the womb, and in this case the chance of transmission is below 30%, and gets as low as 1% with medical intervention.

HIV does not just appear, it must be acquired from another carrier/sufferer. You can acquire it through your mother, unprotected vaginal, anal and in rare cases oral sex, sharing unsterilised needles or blades or any circumstance where you come into contact with blood or sexual fluids (ie vaginal fluids, sperm, semen)

It is important to always check any partners who you have unprotected sex with if they had any exposure to the virus. It may be an awkward ask for you but your boyfriend's former sexual history is important thing to check. If he is unsure at all, you should both be screened

Ohh, ick. Some people are born with HIV. Some are not.

Get tested. Take your boyfriend. It's always good to know.

to put your mind to rest both of you get tested at your local health department. you can be born with it if your parents have it

You are only born with it if your parents had it. And even then its not definite you will get it. You can get it thru exchanging of blood, seminal and vaginal fluids and sharing needles for drugs etc. Testing consists of a blood test...but HIV will not necessarily show up until 3 months after infection. Try a question and answer page like this for more info. Dont be scared lots of people go for tests. Its totally normal and responsible.

and the guy who wrote this:
everyone who gets it is born with it
and most people who have it dont know it
you have a good chance of having it

rubbish. just being an idiot x

I would get tested. It might be sort of awkward to randomly ask your boyfriend to go get tested with you, at least I would think so. I would get tested yourself first, and then if you have something drag him to get tested/treated as well.

You can either be born with Hiv, or you can catch it from a partner who has it, or through a blood transfusion, sharing needles, etc. To get tested they just draw blood.

Get tested if it makes you feel better. If you were born with it, you'd know by now. If you test positive, then bf probabaly infected you (unless you have had other partners).

HIV is not something you are born with unless your mother had HIV. I have never been tested, nor had to worry about it. But, if your boyfriend loves you, then he should go with you and both be tested, for your own health and well being. If he loves you then he would agree with that.

Take him with you to get both of you tested. Go there armed a bit of preliminary knowledge :
www.thebody.com
visit this site, it is very informative regarding HIV.
Do not get answers on this subject from people on Y/A... get that knowledge from a reputable site like the I just posted.

You CAN ask your boyfriend to go with you, for piece of mind maybe you should get tested. You can only be born with it if your mother has tested positive for hiv and you were exposed to blood during the delivery. You will only test accurately 6mths after the questionable event took place. The test can be done at a community health center or if you feel comfortable at your doctor's office.

Yes, you need to be tested.
Yes, it would be good if your BF went with you and got tested also.
You can have it and not know it, not show any symptoms for a long time.
You can get it from your mother (if she's got it) when you are born, but it's not something that can be passed on genetically.
I'm not sure about the statistics of children contracting HIV at birth living long enough to start having sex and whether or not they're able to pass that on, but that would be a good question to ask your health care provider.
You can go to a county clinic or hospital and get tested and get some advice if you don't have insurance or if you don't want to go to your regular doctor. If you are in college, there will be a health clinic on campus that you can go to.
Good luck.

You are everyone you AND your BF have ever slept with. Get tested, know for yourself, if he won't go, dump him, he's probably cheating on you.

If your mother had HIV when you were born, then you could have HIV. That's the only way you could be born with it!

Well, no, you're not born with HIV unless your mother has it in which case it is possible to have it from birth or get it from the mother's breast milk.
I would have your boyfriend get tested along with you since if either of your are positive there's a good chance that the other is positive as well.
If you want some information about the test themselves:
What will happen is they will draw some blood from a vein in your arm (usually behind your elbow). The first test that is done on your blood sample is called the ELISA test. It takes about 2-4 days to get the results. If this test is positive, it will be done one more time. If it is positive the second time, a second test called the Western Blot test will be done. This test is more specific than the ELISA so it takes about a week or so for the results to come back. If the 2 ELISA tests are positive and the Western Blot is also positive, HIV is diagnosed.
There are lots of facts I could give you but without knowing what you want specifically I'm not going to bombard you.

That reminds me: I was tested two weeks ago & need to call for results.

Facts about HIV and testing:

You CAN be born with HIV if your mother has it (although children born to women who are carriers will not necessarily be infected). However, you would know by now if you had been born with it, I'm fairly certain.

It is a very good idea to get tested. It is also a very good idea to have boyfriend get tested as well. Particularly BECAUSE: the HIV virus has a "window": someone infected with HIV may continue to test positive for quite some time (I used to hear that six months was the "incubation" period, but I have heard of much greater lengths of time as well).

We've all heard of condoms being used "incorrectly", but they really gave us little info on this. Correct use, in short: Pinch the end of the condom when putting it on, leaving a little room (just a little) for the semen to go. Condoms should fit snuggly, but not tight. If you have had one break, go up a size. Slip off? Down a size. Sizes are pretty much limited to: regular, large, or "snug" (a little smaller). Regular condoms work for most men, though. Throw out condoms that are past their date or have been stored in hot places (i.e., glove compartment of car, a wallet, unventilated, hot cabinet in your bathroom). Sheepskin (non-latex) condoms DO NOT PROTECT AGAINST HIV!!! I'm actually not sure about the female condom, which is polyurothane.

You must use "extra strength" condoms for anal sex. I imagine this is a little-known fact. I am not sure whether you can buy them at the pharmacy, or if you have to go to a specialty store.

If you become at risk for contacting HIV, in such circumstances as rape or accidental contact with a used syringe (it happens to health care workers) there is a series shots that you can get that will almost definately prevent you from contracting HIV, but ONLY if you get them RIGHT AWAY, like within twenty-four hours.

everyone who gets it is born with it
and most people who have it dont know it
you have a good chance of having it
