HIV/AIDS Notfication, Should The World Know Who They Are?

Sexual offenders have personal information on a website, losing their rights to privacy because of crimes they've commited. Do you believe that we should do the same for HIV/AIDS patient? Wouldn't it be great if they were on a website so that we could know who they are and prevent ourselves from getting infected?

Hi there,

Not at all. Being HIV+ is not a crime. Period. If you don't want to become infected use a condom! If that is too much of a risk than ASK the person their status and decide accordingly. If they don't know for certain (and the ONLY way to know is to have had the blood work done) their status, still use a condom! It's as simple as that. It's time people started to be more proactive in their own sexual health then blaming everyone else. It takes two to tango!!

Associating people who are HIV+ with the same moral aptitude as sexual predators is highly offensive. You are assuming that EVERY person who is infected with HIVand KNOWS it (many people do not know their status because of FEAR and stigma and so they do not get tested) are willingly and intentionally infecting innocent people. That is simply wrong and not justified. I have been HIV+ for about 10 years now give or take a few and I have NEVER intentionally infected another person, EVER. I'm not a criminal and I don't like being treated as one thank-you very much. And it is stigmas such as that that makes disclosing status even that much harder for people to do. Do you have ANY idea how difficult it is to say to someone, "Oh by the way..." and face the humiliation, ridicule, rejection and fear? I highly doubt it or you would not be so quick to judge. What happens if you become infected at some point in your life? Would you agree to put your name and face on a website disclosing your status to the world? Treated like a common criminal? Diseases are not criminals; what people choose to do with those diseases can be.

Again, it takes two to tango. A person who is HIV+ should be disclosing status to their partners and safer sex guidelines need to be in place to. Not only for the HIV- partner. Sorry, it's not always about you! Condom use not only protects the uninfected partner but they help protect the HIV+ partner from becomming re-infected potentially eliminating numerous drugs, possibly all, that are used to help manage the disease and prolong life.

There have been a number of epidemiologic studies 鈥?studies that are conducted in real-life setting, where one partner is infected with HIV and the other partner is not 鈥?that have demonstrated consistent use of latex (or polyurethane) condoms provide a high degree or protection against HIV. However, the key to effective protection is consistent and correct use of condoms. But beyond that, if the person is honest and upfront, things can be done to ensure that not only the sex is a fulfilling as you want it to be, but that the unifected partner remains that way.

Just because there are a few rotten apples in the bunch does not mean that all apples are bad.

Cheers.

Yeah great only in theory. Would you check the online HIV status of ALL the men you went out with first? Is it possible to avoid having sex before doing the checking? What if they just happened to have the same names? What if they are positive, but the name is not available yet, due to server breakdown or it's not yet updated? What if the HIV people dint get HIV because they are gay/drug abusers/leery old men/other types of people who deserved it? It would be morally wrong to humiliate them like this, wouldn't it? How about, only HIV ppl cld be allowed to know the names of other fellow HIV ppl so they can go comfort each other and provide support?

i don't think thats right, because it's there buisness and it can ruin there life, as long as you protect yourself and respect yourself you will be fine. aids is no spread by silivia, or by using the tiolet after someone. and if you see anyone bleeding ever you should always stay away.

No, I don't think that should be done. Because they will have a stigma. People will be biased against them. Also, not all of them a trying to spread it to someone else. If you read on it, most people who have it give it to someone else because they don't know that they are carrying the virus. You can't compare a sex offender to someone who has a virus.

i can see where you are coming from but that would not help too much because some people don't know they have it and some people may know but won't ever get it checked out if they know it will be posted on the web..

lets also start a list for venereal warts and herpes and hepatitis and what the hell while were here lets start a list of everyone thats had any kind of disease .

Have they commited a crime?

They would just end up getting discriminated agaisnt, more so than already.

Under the new disclosure laws coming into effect at the end of this year in America that is EXACTLY what will happen to those who test positive for non specific antibodies.

YOU WILL BE BRANDED FOR LIFE.

This is not only morally offensive but it is highly unethical in my opinion. HIV/AIDS is a disease, not a crime. It is up to each individual to be sexually responsible and if they plan to have sex with someone, they should go together and be tested and be allowed to find out eachother's status. I would not rely on personal statements alone, because people could be in denial and lie about it, or they could be HIV+ and not know. I also it is up to each of us as individuals to get to know who we have sex with. If there is any reason to suspect infidelity, I recommend repeat testing. It won't hurt anything if the person is sure that they've been faithful, and if they refuse, I would find that cause to doubt that person's credibility and integrity.
