Divulging HIV status to apartment roommates? |
I live in a "quad" (an apartment where four rooms share a kitchen) and have known that one of my quad mates is HIV positive for quite some time. Today I got a call from the manager asking me if I was aware of his positive status - apparently he told the manager a day or two ago. It sounds like the manager might be planning to divulge the information to the other two quad mates. What are the legal rules regarding divulgence of this information? Under what circumstances may a person's HIV or Hepatitis C status be disclosed? Your roommates HIV status is protected by Federal law. Nobody has the right to divulge this information without his consent. It is unlawful to discriminate against someone in housing or employment on the basis of HIV status. You might want to advise your landlord that you appreciate his concern, but he is opening himself up to liability by revealing this information to others. |
