That drug companies should waive patents on HIV drugs?

It would mean that any company can copy the invention of the original drug company. Since they do not have to win back the research and development costs for this medicine (which is nowadays often in the many billions of dollar per new drug), they could produce it much cheaper, so the drugs would cost a lot less. This would be the positive thing.

The downside would be that no company will invest anythin anymore into the development of new HIV drugs, since they would lose money on it, after all they need to pay their employees, the building costs, research facilities etc. So no new HIV drugs would be developed.

What people often don't know is that more than 99% of all drugs used have been developed by commercial companies, all most noting has been developed by universities or other non-profit organisations.

It would mean a little gain on the short term and a big loss on the long term for healthcare.
