Help...HIVas a nurse?

I am a student nurse and at clinicals was told to clean a patient and chnage the bed. The bed was soiled with stool and blood, so I wore a yellow gown and double gloves. I had a cat scratch in my arm, so thats why I wore the gown. I didnt wear a mask or a face shield, since bllod wouldnt splash me in the face....later the nurse informed me that the patient was HIV positive...now IM freakin out....What are the possibilities I probably got it from changeing the soiled bed with blood...? Thanks...am just so worried...

HIV can't live out side of the body for very long and it is exceedingly unlikely that you'd contract HIV from bloody sheets and a covered scratch on your arm. Unless you were drenched in the blood, i wouldn't worry too much.

By the way - using the gloves and gown on the soiled sheets is considered universal precautions which is the idea that you protect yourself as you wouldn't necessarily know which of your patients have HIV or hepatitis B. Universal precautions basically assumes everyone is infectious.

I would think that if you covered up the scratch, that you're fine.

you should b safe.

you are fine! you took precautions and protected yourself...you would need direct contact between your wound that the mans blood to be nervous...im sure your scratch was not an open wound... i wouldnt worry, you wore the gown...

Don't sweat it.. HIV doesn't last long outside the body... Have to have direct contact blood to blood. Once its left the body it doesn't last long , I don't think u have anything to worry about.

You should be fine.. You covered up the open cut and wore gloves.

slim to none.

but watch 28 days later it will make you feel better =)

This is in singles and dating? You took enough safety precautions, as you should already know, you can only get it through direct contact with an infected bodily fluid. If you wore gloves and a gown, you did not have direct fluid contact. In fact contact isn't enough, you have to get it into an open wound, or ingest, or well you know the last way, but I highly doubt you would go about that with a patient you don't even know. You followed the precautions necessary to keep yourself safe, don't worry about it. Good luck to you

LOL about the 28 days later, if that doesn't make you feel better, 28 weeks later will. (its a sequel)

Hiv can only be passed via fluids, so you have nothing to worry about

You shouldn't have HIV.

It's usually only contracted from direct contant of a lot of fluid (sex, large open wounds etc) so you've nothing to worry about.

My friend got arterial spray in his eyes from a HIV+ person, and he hasn't contracted. Don't worry about it.
