Thomas Harris Fans (silence of lambs) - what's the obsession with gay characters?

I don't understand why every other character in Thomas Harris' books must be either transgendered, gay, lesbian, HIV positive or generally confused about their sexuality...

I just finished reading Hannibal and although it is very well written - when the book is done, it makes a cannibal seem "normal" compared to all the strange sexualities of others in the book...

What is his obsession with connecting gays to all this perversity? It's not very accurate - history considered...

books about "the dark side" of anything often have gay characters. ann rice has lots of gay characters. if a vampire isn't gay they are at least bisexual. alfred hitchock has more gay murderers in his films than anyone i can think of -- one of my fave evil gays in hitchcock is martin landau in north by northwest -- hes so creepy and in love with james mason.
the whole movie is social satire so you can't take the landaus character out of context -- cary grant is always the perfect stereotype of a straight white male business exec -- his tie is always tied and his suit is always gray flannel.

maybe it's his way of "coming out"

All these gay hating right wingers and others are -for some reason -obsessed with homosexuality.
Has to be that deep down they are fascinated by it and most likely fear that they are homosexual.Otherwise why the obsession?
(There has to be a cause of and for the obsessiveness)

i think it just makes for a more interesting story if the characters are gay.

Considering this is not the early 80's I am pretty sure being HIV positive has nothing to do with being gay.
