Is my Dad homophobic? How do you think ig my Dad?

Recently, my neighbour passed away. He is a gay man. I felt very sad after hearing this bad news. His relatives said he committed suicide because of depression. In fact, I have known he has suffered from depression since last year. I have been hanging out with him ( e.g. watch comedy in cinema together ) in order to cheer him up . I really can't believe thus truth.

However, my Dad says " Son. You know he's gay. Therefore, I am wondering if he is died of AIDS or HIV. Do you believe what his relative said ? Well, I don't. Gay men are HIV positive, haha "

Also, 2 hours ago, we saw a famous male ballet dancer on TV, followed by an interview of him. Dad says " Those male ballet dancers are so gay. Ewwwww! Also that guy has a very high pitch when answeing reporter's questions. He is so gay, so s*ssy, Gross! Son, don't let anyone turn you gay "

In fact, I'm a 23 year old closeted gay man. I fele scared by my Dad's words.
How do you think of my Dad? Is he homophobic?

Firstly, I'm sorry for your loss, you are a very kind spirit.

You say your question is about your dad but I'm not sure if you are asking is your dad is homophobic or if you should 'come out'. At some point in your life, you will need to be open with everyone important in your life otherwise there is a 'distance'. I am not gay so it is easy for me to say but a gay friend of mine has carried around his closet for years and can't be the person he wants for fear of his parents reaction. Just be yourself and if the question ever comes up, then maybe you could just face it. Only you will know when the time is right.

If there is a violence threat in there anywhere, then I suggest you think long and hard before you say anything and seek guidance from the gay community.

It's YOUR life and just be happy.

Yeah you're dad was raised and heavily influenced by an anti-gay society.

I think so. What are you going to do?

You know, it's kind of funny. A lot of male chauvenistic-type men use gay as a synonym for sissy. Now, your dad might feel different about someone like Clint Eastwood coming out of the closet as a gay man. Maybe your dad's issue isn't homosexuality as much as it is masculinity vs. feminimity.

Your dad's not homophobic. I'm not scared of people, I just don't want men to be together. Men shouldn't go out or kiss or anything like that. They should go out with girls, kiss girls, and marry women. Maybe your dad feels the same way I do. Even if you were gay, do you think your dad would be scared of you? Maybe it's not really a homophobia but just not wanting men to be with men.

Ignorant and bigoted, if not homophobic.

No reason to be scared, though. Uncomfortable, of course. I wonder why your dad feels this compulsion to let everyone know how he feels about gays.

It must hurt to hear someone you love express hatred/digust toward others who are like you.

Get on with your life, I spent 35 years in the closet and was terriblely un-happy and now I have the best times and am looking forward to many more with my partner.

Will your father be angry if you come ou? Maybe, He might even kick you out of the house. But the odds are your mom already knows.

It will be hard, but prpbably worth it.
