By the end of 2005, 18.8% of adults (15-49) were HIV positive, and by the end of that year around 320 000 (mostly black) people dropped dead From AIDS.
By 2010, it's estimated that AIDS deaths will be around the 6 million mark.
An interesting statistic in South Africa is that three times as many people that attend weddings attend funerals.
The government's response?
Putting a Marxist witchdoctor in charge of the country's health, who swears that beetroot, garlic and vitamins are the answer. Silly me, I thought that garlic was only useful as a deterrent against vampires.
A president that (when sober) publicly refutes the correlation between HIV and AIDS, whilst he spends millions of rand to build a wall around his property. A government that's happy to loot taxpayer funds whilst the country's health system has deterioted to such an extent that one has to bring your own bedding to hospitals, at the same time that urgently needed doctors and nurses are leaving the country in their thousands because of the government's racist employment policies.

So will Africa Brad in certain ways i agree with you, the government could have put some one with more knowledge in as the minister of health and yes more money should be given towards finding a cure for aids.

my father got aids from a blood transfusion in 1982 and in 1996 my father passed away. a slow and painfuller death penalty that he received, aids is not a joke i do not wish even my worst enemies to get aids, its a horrible disease that needs to be stop.

AIDS is a huge problem down here, but it's hardly destroyed the whole country. South Africa is at the forefront of the medical battle against HIV, despite the government and health department's failings.
This nation will once again stand up to the challenges that face it, be it crime, disease, or politics, and will emerge the stronger for it. I tend to think AIDS might be the great equalizer in SA.
No doubt it's become a problem disease for all races, but let's face it there are a lot more Black people out there effected by it. It might be due to a lack of proper education, who knows, but the fact remains that about 90% of people dying from AIDS are black.
Another factor to take into consideration is the fact that most deaths(from AIDS) are documented as TB, or other minor diseases.
So, just how accurate are AIDS statistics? Looking at the way AIDS was dealt with in the country one can only assume that one of two things happened.
1) Those in power are absolute morons and whenever they open their mouths they are actually telling us that they really don't understand one thing on their job description and that someone should please give them an easier job.
2) They had come to the conclusion that the only way for them to keep on milking the country would be to reduce the population somewhat and the appearance of incompetence was used.
Personally I think there is a 99.99% chance that option one is what is going on and that option two is simply used to make people think there are actually brains in the government with some form of strategical cognition.
Which brings me back to your question about whether it is the great equalizer. Considering that the unchallenged spread of HIV was caused mostly by stupidity on the side of the governement I don't think it can be called an equalizer. More like stupidity tax which will soon be rectified because one thing Africa can do well is breed. Well maybe they ll be able to expand Kruger with all the extra space? Great Equalizer of what ??
