How likely is it to get HIV when receiving oral sex?

I recently met a guy and we kissed a lot and he gave me oral sex. He then proceeded to tell me afterwords that he is HIV+. I have talked with people and have a doctors appt made but I just need some reassuring words this morning that it is not positive that I will contract it. It is wrecking my nerves.

I am a little nervous mainly due to the fact that I shaved the area that morning.

Mature answers and info only would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi there,

Please relax. Even though the guy should have disclosed his status to you before hand, HIV transmission through oral sex is not considered to be a documented route of transmission. HIV is not an easy virus to catch. From the studies I have read as well as what my doctor has told me, even though it only takes one exposure to contract the virus, studies seem to show that it is multiple exposures that tend to do the trick. But again, it only takes one.

Of the different sex acts, the one that often causes the greatest amount of confusion in terms of risk 鈥?and raises the greatest number of questions 鈥?is penile-oral sex. The fact is, most experts agree that fellatio is not an efficient route of HIV transmission. However, this does not mean that it cannot happen.

Research attempting to evaluate the risk of fellatio has often faced important limitations. For starters, very few people participating in studies only engaged in penile-oral sex. Many people also had unprotected vaginal or anal intercourse, making it very difficult to determine if unprotected fellatio is an "independent factor" associated with HIV transmission. There are also people who test positive for HIV and claim that unprotected fellatio was their only risky behavior. However, it's virtually impossible to know if these people are always reporting their sexual behavior accurately. (Study volunteers often have a difficult time admitting the truth about potentially embarrassing behavior to healthcare professionals conducting scientific studies.)

Because unprotected fellatio can mean that body fluids from one person can (and do) come into contact with the mucosal tissues or open cuts, sores, or breaks in the skin of another person, there is a "theoretical risk" of HIV transmission. "Theoretical risk" means that passing an infection from one person to another is considered possible, even though there haven't been any (or only a few) documented cases. This term can be used to differentiate from documented risks. Having unprotected receptive anal or vaginal intercourse with an HIV-positive partner is a documented risk, as they have been shown in numerous studies to be an independent risk factor for HIV infection. Having unprotected oral sex is a theoretical risk, as it is considered possible, but has never been shown to be an independent risk factor for HIV infection.

Here's a good way to think about theoretical risk: In theory, it is possible that while walking down the street, a meteor will fall on your head and kill you instantly. This is because meteors do occasionally fall to earth. People live their lives above ground, so there is a theoretical risk of being hit be a meteor. In fact, there have been reports of a few people being hit by meteors. But because the risk is so small, given that few meteors fall to earth and the large number of inhabitants of this planet, the risk is purely theoretical. The same principle holds true with oral sex 鈥?millions of people all over the world are believed to engage in unprotected oral sex and there have only been a handful of documented cases of HIV transmission. In turn, fellatio, and other types of oral sex (see below), remains a theoretical risk for HIV infection.

There have been a number of studies that have closely followed MSM and heterosexual couples, in which one partner was HIV positive and the other partner was HIV negative. In all of the studies, couples that used condoms consistently and correctly during every experience of vaginal or anal sex 鈥?but didn't use condoms during oral sex 鈥?did not see HIV spread from the HIV positive partner to the HIV negative partner.

There have been three case reports and a few studies suggesting that some people have been infected with HIV as a result of unprotected oral sex. However, these case reports and studies all involved MSM 鈥?men who were the receptive partners (the person doing the "sucking") during unprotected oral sex with another HIV-positive man. There haven't been any case reports or studies documenting HIV infection among female receptive partners during unprotected oral sex. Even more importantly, there hasn't been a single documented case of HIV transmission to an insertive partner (the person being "sucked") during unprotected oral sex, either among MSM or heterosexuals.

Is insertive oral sex a possible route of HIV transmission? Yes. But is it a documented risk? Absolutely not.

Hope this helps.

Cheers.

the odds are about 3/4

IM SURE U ARE OK, HE WAS A COMPLETE FUKHEAD NOT TO TELL U B4 HE SUCKED U OFF, DONT TRUST ANYONE ANYMORE, I RECKON U R SAFE, LUCKY U DIDNT HAVE SEX,

GOOD LUCK

IF U SUCKED HIM YOUR CHANCES WOULD B HIGHER

my girlfriend is hiv we have had oral for years next to no chance of you getting it unless he was bleeding from the gums at the time

wow! first off he should be reported because he knew that he was positive before he gave you oral sex. and a mature answer for you even though i know that your head is wrecking because of this but you should know that the best way to protect yourself is abstinence and oral sex to me is just the same as having raw sex although i do not think that the chances of getting it orally is not even as close as it is getting it with having sex without a condom it is still a chance it ultimately comes down to how strong your immune system is, and just being lucky to not have contracted it.

Well I'm not gay but can handle a serious question, actually I appreciate it.

Don't worry about the shaved pubes. Once the virus touches air it is killed.

I don't wanna rattle your chain, but the only way you could have contracted the virus is if he had open sores in his mouth. The blood would have had to go down the little hole. Even then it is possible that you expelled it when ya nutz.

First of all the guy was wrong for not telling you anything beforehand but because we have jerks like that who are inconsiderate, not meaning to sound like an old record,it is always best to use precautions. Not to answer your question, the chances are greater if he had opened cuts or you had opened cuts. And the chances far more greater if you had performed oral sex and he ejaculated. But in the meantime, stay away from that man,his intentions don't sound good because honey your life is just too precious so please be careful and protect yourself.

The highest risk is when one of your body cavities is the receiver of body fluids. In this case you were the giver so it was much less risky; I would not worry about that .
I would worry about the fact that you were intimate with someone and then after the fact was told that he is HIV+. This conversation should have happened BEFORE the kissing, etc. so that you would have a choice. A good case to always assume they are HIV+ and use safe sex unless proven otherwise.

well u can get hiv through kissing as well so ur chances are 1-3 go get tested

What you fell to realize is that HIV is alive in bodily fluids. And yes it can be spreaded via oral sex. You will need to test for HIV now and every six months. Knowledge is safety, never have unprotected sex. There is a special condom called the kissing mint that is used especially for oral sex and not penetration. It has a thinner sheath then the one used for penetration to heightened the oral experience. So please learn from your mistakes and remember to practice safe sex every time.
