What do you think of Hiv positive people having children?

I posted the question to see what people would say but me and my child mother have a 19 month old healthy baby girl who is negative. Both me and her mom are positive. only 0.5% of babies are being borned with HIV.

Hey there pozdaddy,

I believe that everyone has a right to have children. Considering that according to studies, if the mother is poz and on meds the chances that the baby contracts the virus is about 2%, which I consider to be a low chance. Now I would be against breast feeding since it has been proven that breast milk might have a high infection risk.

As I said on my question on mixed status couples, if me and my poz boyfriend decide to have children we will use sperm washing to eliminate the possibility of the baby being poz.

I understand that it is a difficult decision to make if the mother is poz, but I also believe that everyone should have children if they are able to. I would preffer it if the mother is in good health with CD4 being high and VL either undetectable or considerably low to decrease the risk of infection even further.

And if after all the risks have been taken into account and everything is done to decrease them and the baby is still born poz, I still believe that we should celebrate life and make sure the baby stays healthy for a very long time. Considering the treatments nowadays, it is clear that people can live with HIV for a very long time and lead a healthy and active life.

Best of luck to ya with all your endaviors!

their children will also be HIV positive

I think they have the same right to have children as anybody else.

It upto their Morale and Value to decide on bringing such a life into this world. Whether he/she will be able to lead a normal life.

for a parent to purposfuly have a child knowing that it is going to be born with HIV is like taking a gun and shooting an innocent person.

the choice to get hiv starts before the first kiss outside of marriage.
Yet if pregnant, any life is better than no life.

I think that if you are pregnant, there is enough medicine available that you could definitely have a mostly normal pregnancy and childbirth, and the child would be born HIV-free. However, if not pregnant, I would suggest the person just focus on being their best selves before bringing someone into the world, because if you are not ready to live your life happy & free, there is no way you can bring another generation up to live their lives happy & free.

It is not fair to that child to make the choice to come to life just to die......think about what you are doing. If it were 100% safe and there was no chance that the baby would be HIV + then I would say do it, but then again how long would you be around to raise the child. I think in all fairness you shouldn't take that chance.

Hi well it depends. It is their decision and many, many children born to HIV parents, do not show any infection or carry the disease. Nature has found a way to reject the transmission of the infection while men are still trying to find anything that even gets close. In any case I think that while it is a personal choice, granted by free societies, HIV parents should consult with their doctors to understand well the case, probabilities and responsibility.

I totally agree with easylost.

If you and your partner are both HIV-positive and want to have a child, there are two important issues to consider: keeping both of you as safe as possible while trying to get pregnant and preventing the baby from becoming infected.

There is a way to conceive without having unprotected sex called sperm washing. This process may remove HIV from the sperm. After washing, the sperm is inserted into the woman through artificial insemination. (For more information contact www.duncanholly.com or www.columbiaivf.org.)

If you try to get pregnant by having unsafe sex, only do so when the woman is most fertile. This will increase the chances of the woman conceiving in fewer attempts.

It is important to lower the risk of reinfecting your partner by reducing your viral load before trying to get pregnant. You also need to follow your drug regimen exactly to prevent HIV from developing resistance.

Taking HIV drugs can greatly reduce the risk of passing on the virus to your baby. Talk to your doctor about what medications to take for your health and the baby's health.

well if they know the right people and have enough money they and there infected children will probably live long enough to infect a large majority of the uneducated public, so what should we think to HIV infected people having children?

Having children is their right but they should also consider the well being of their children which would be susceptible to acquire the deseases from their parents.
