Is Their Any Such Thing As An HIV Prevention Pill?

you know how their are pills to prevent pregnancy??
well, are their pills to prevent HIV or any STD's??
like right after sex you'd take the pill && then boom no hiv or std
is their any kind of pill like that?
well, eh this question sounds stupid but i'd really like to know
:)

There's a preventative course of a whole heap of pills if you think you have been exposed to HIV. It's not the same thing as taking a birth control regiment or the Plan B pill, it's a massive cocktail of drugs that you take for something like a few weeks to prevent infection.

The best form of HIV prevention is safe sex... or abstinence really...

Yes, there is. Read about it here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-exposu...

It's not just one pill, but a four week long treatment that should be started within 72 hours of exposure, or less. The sooner it is started, the more effective it is. Even then, it is not 100% effective, but it's the best there is right now.

The treatment is not magic, like you suggest, but a very serious and expensive matter. By far the best solution is PREVENTION by practicing safe sex. The risk of being infected, even if you get treated early, is far too great not to be seriously worried about.

Among other STD's, some, like syphilis, are relatively easily cured. Others, like herpes, are impossible to cure and can only be treated, with only partial success. Depends on the disease.

Hope this helps.

Good luck!

If you suspect that you have been exposed to HIV, there are guidelines set by the CDC to help the patient not contract the virus. The guidelines are called a Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP). The PEP consists of about 2 or 3 anti-retroviral medication. The patient must stick to this regimen for a month or more and you will not know if you have been infected until 6 months after exposure. The drug combination can be adjusted depending on side effects or drug resistance. This is also not like pop a pill get better, it's a tough experience both physically and mentally. Unfortunately, some patients do end up contracting HIV anyway. So, not all problems can be solved by a pill that when taken within 72 hours is usually successful, be safe.

Christian's right actually, it's an experimental cocktail that isn't really all that effective yet.

And of course, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Condoms are a lot cheaper and easier to access than a pill.

Outside of the GLBT world it's the same pill as the one that prevents pregnancy: an aspirin pill clasped tightly between the knees.

It's called abstinence. Works 100% of the time. Nothing else does.

there are no prophilactic pills for std's.
Hiv is a virus and would not respond to antibiotics and nobody has as of yet discovered or invented an antiviral that will consistantly prevent the virus from infecting its victim.

It's called abstinence

Yeah, its called an acid pill (no not the drug)

It kils hiv in one day

If people keep dying of HIV to this very day, isn't the answer obvious?

It's called a condom XD
