I had unprotected sex...?

I had unprotected vaginal sex with a prostitute. If she is HIV + how long would it take for me to show symptoms of HIV? Please answer. I am worried.

this occured yesterday

Incubation period for HIV is about six months.

I suppose there is not reason to lecture you about the criminal stupidity of having unprotected sex, especially with a prostitute.

All I can say is good luck. Seriously.

Many people have no symptoms for several years after being infected. Some people have flu-like symptoms within weeks or months of infection, but not everyone does.
The only way to find out for sure if you are infected is to be tested. It can take up to 3 months (in most cases), or very rarely, up to 6 months, for someone who is infected to test positive.

Important: Once someone is infected, they can pass the virus on to others, even if they do not yet show symptoms or test positive.

You should be tested for HIV, and for other STDs as well.

Well, the worst case scenario is that she was infected with HIV. The chances of contracting HIV from a single episode of unprotected vaginal sex is estimated around 1 in 1000 (IF your partner is infected). She is probably not. She is a higher risk compare to other people but still it is very unlikely that she was infected.

Put them together and you will see your risk is very low based on that one time exposure. It is not zero though. Get tested around 6-8 weeks after your last exposure. Almost all infected people test positive by this time. Then confirm it with a 3 months conclusive test.

It is also a good idea to talk to your family doctor and see if he/she is in favour of prescribing PEP, which is a drug to reduce the chance of HIV infection by 50%. But you have to do if you did not pass 72 hours after your last exposure. Otherwise it will not be effective. But I do not believe that doctor will prescribe this for you.

If you do not have access to your doctor, then go to emergency room right now and explain the situation and they will take care of you.

I will not be too worried. Good luck and keep us posted if you can.

Primary HIV Infection

fever
headache
pain in the limbs
sore throat
swollen lymph nodes
fatigue
loss of appetite
diarrhea
skin rash

Those early symptoms occur within the first weeks after the infection with the virus took place. In this stage though the HIV antibody test is ineffective because the infected person's immune system hasn't developed any antibodies to the virus yet. It usually takes about 3 months until antibodies are detectable.

now you worry.

symptoms may take a long time. years.

You need to get tested. the first test you should do is in one month. then go back in 3 months to get another test. Since the test looks for antibodies to HIV, if you are negative in one month it may be just because there were sufficient antibodies.

And when you go in one month, get tested for all STDs because frankly, those are more common.

In the next 3 months, you need to not have sex with anyone, or at the very least use a condom. And if you shoot up drugs, then don't share your needles. because if you are infected you can pass it one, in fact you are very contagious in this time period if you do have it.

Your behavior was extremely risky and you need to get tested. In one month and again in 3 months. at 3 months 99.6 of all people who have the virus will test positive. at 6 months, its about 100%.

I would advise you to go to the Emergency Room and ask for a PEP (post exposure prophylactic) if this is taken within 72 hours it can help prevent HIV infection. In about half of people infected, symptoms start to show after 8 weeks. This is generally described as a mild to severe flu like illness. Good luck.

no wonder you are worried.

it can take years for any symptoms. some people go undetected for up to 12 years. it is usually picked up if you end up getting persistent illnesses like colds and flu's due to a lowered immune system.

you will need to get tested for every STD in a couple of weeks then go back every 3 months for HIV tests.

My God what were you thinking? How could you have allowed your hormones get the best of you like that. It could take up to 3 months for a test to be positive (antibodies should be present by then if you have the disease). There is nothing you can do in the mean time other than pray and use a condom for every sexual encounter. Symptoms could take up to 5 years unless the person has full blown AIDS.

Well, that is the way the virus is transmitted.

You do need to go to your doctor and give a blood specimen for HIV testing. It will give a result without you having to await for symptoms to show up. I do hope all is well. I expect it will be, but, next time, it's your job to look after yourself, etc., etc.

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha that sucks! that's what you get when you bang dirty hookers. hell she might not even have it. did she give you a discount because that might be a sign that she is damaged goods. but chances are you caught something from her because she is obviously banging strange men without even plastic wrap on their dicks

........

Wow ur stupid.... you was not thinkin about HIV and and pregnancy when you was tearing it up... but after u did, now your worried about the virus... well go to the HIV clinic in 3 months and get a test, this might be a warning from god to stop messing around with whores, my dad told me ( if you sleep with a whore, u will die in 2 years) go by that quote ;)

Whoa, get tested soon as possible. what if she pregnant by you. what if she has very std in the world. i am worried for you!!!

This website (http://aids.about.com/od/newlydiagnosed/... should help you with your questions. Good Luck!

omg mann :(
this is bad it will show up in moths or weeks or it will be dormant for a while it sypmtoms show up like the flu

Wait 3 months, get blood tested.

Then at the 6 month period, get tested again.

If your negative for both, your in the clear.
