What are the chances of having HIV?

I've only had protected sex in my life, both of the girls were virgins, however, they have had past boyfriends, and possible oral sex. I've now begun to worry because my current girlfriend is sick with flu like symptoms, and I am aware that it is a symptom of a positive HIV reading.

Honestly, your chances are low. But I know how nerve wracking it can be wondering. That's one of the side effects of having sex. The best thing to do would be get yourself and your girlfriend tested together. That way you wouldn't worry anymore. You can always go to your doctor's office or a local clinic. If you live in a metropolitan area it's easy to find somewhere that offers free testing, check in the yellow pages or just google it.

Sex requires a lot of responsibility and you clearly understand that because you've used protection. And flu symptoms are very common this time of year. It's probably nothing, but if testing would allow you to sleep soundly at night, by all means get tested. It's best to know earlier than later.

You are VERY unlikely to have caught HIV from one of your ex girlfriends if they have only had oral sex with ex's and you have only had protected sex.

FACT:

The symptoms of early HIV infection do not always appear. They probably appear to some degree in around 60 - 70 % of people, but very many people remain completely well. If they do appear then it is likely they will develop somewhere between 2 and 12 weeks after infection. Symptoms before this time are very rare indeed. The only sure way to diagnose HIV is with an HIV test.

Were you having sex with your girlfriends 2 weeks after they were with their ex's??

If you're that worried, why don't yo go and have a test? They can even do saliva tests for it now - We send people for them all the time.

Also, have you spoken to your current girlfriend about this??

I really think she just has flu!

If you have ALWAYS had protected sex, then your chances are very very low.

Flu like symptoms are a symptom of HIV, but it would be severe flu like symptoms (she most likely does have the flu). HIV effects the immune system severely, so she would have a lot of obvious other health issues as well (such as massive weight loss in a short period of time).

Are you able to go take a HIV test to put your mind to rest? I'm not sure, but I believe that the Public Health Department offers them.

Honestly, I worried about it myself for years... and finally my doctor ordered the HIV test for other reasons (mainly to rule it out), and I can't tell you how relieved I was just to see that "negative result" next to it.

Your current girlfriend is most likely ill from the flu. We are just now getting out of the "regular" flu season and there are still plenty of influenza viruses going around. If you are having protected sex, you are as safe as you can be other than practicing abstinence.

Your chances sound very, very low. Flu-like symptoms can be a sign of HIV, but they can also just be a sign of poor health or (imagine) a flu!

I know, however, that you will be worried and consumed until you know for sure, so go get tested and ease your mind.
