Health class?

the teacher tells me all answers are in the book but I cant find this one for the life of me, so I figured I would ask here. the question is

"if a infected person with hiv goes untreated, how long before they start to show symptoms and list 3 symptoms they would most likly see".

Ill pick a best answer for the points when I get my home work graded in a couple days

Acute HIV infection may be associated with symptoms resembling mononucleosis or the flu within 2 to 4 weeks of exposure. HIV seroconversion (converting from HIV negative to HIV positive) usually occurs within 3 months of exposure.
Any symptoms of illness may occur, since infections can occur throughout the body. Special symptoms relating to HIV infection include:
* Sore throat
* Mouth sores, including candidal infection
* Muscular stiffness or aching
* Headache
* Diarrhea
* Swollen lymph glands
* Fever
* Fatigue
* Rash of various types, including seborrheic dermatitis
* Frequent vaginal yeast infections
Note: At the time of diagnosis with HIV infection, many people have not experienced any symptoms.
Please see the web pages for more details on HIV infection.

its would take between 3- 11 years before it starts showing symptoms ! most likely symptoms are frequent diarreha ! and repiratory dieseases and subborn cold !

Symptoms start to show within 2 weeks-6months after being infected. The symptoms tend to be sort of flu-like. Runny nose, fever, headache, weight loss, loss of appetite, etc.

Good luck on making a good grade.

Cheers

From the top of my head..

First, between 1 to 2/3rds of people infected with HIV experience a mono like or 'flu like' syndrome termed 'primary HIV' within about 1 month of infection. This happens when the virus is rapidly spreading and subsides within a few weeks. After Primary HIV people will generally feel perfectly well until their CD4+ count drops significantly and their viral load skyrockets.After that we would be talking about AIDS symptoms.

50% of people will show symptoms within 5 years post seroconversion, 90% will show symptoms within 9 years if nobody in the populations are treated.

Initial symptoms would be

1) for 1-2/3 of individuals infected they experience something like mono

Then when you get into AIDS it's opportunisitc.

-thrush
-pneumonia (pneumocystis or still commonly 'PCP')
-karposi's sarcoma
-unexplained weight loss
-fevers/ night sweats

So really you're most likely to see common coughs and colds turn serious and things like fungal infections (thrush) overgrow.

You're going to have to source it from your book for homework, but look at the CDC and thebody for information.

Remember, one of the things to answer in health classes are co-infections. You're quite likely to see things like syphilis and hepatitis symptoms. There aren't because somebody has HIV, but they are a 'high risk group' indicator because the transmission vectors are the same.

Showing symptoms are different time tables for everyone. You can look up the symptoms on the net. If two people contracted HIV the same day, one might show symptoms and one may never show symptoms. HIV affects people at different rates with different symptoms. It is not one size fits all.

it varies between everybody, it can range within a couple months to a couple years after infection, the body needs to go through seroconversion, which is when your body is building antibodies for HIV.

You can ask any doctor that symptoms are the worst way to tell if you have HIV, however some of the symptoms can be within the range of the following.
-prolonged fever
-swollen lymph nodes THROUGHOUT THE BODY (having 1 or 2 swollen lymph nodes do not suggest HIV ars)
-fatigue is also a popular one.

hope this helps.
