If I remember correctly there is an initial infection with flu like symptoms that occurs 10-14 days after initial contact. This lasts 3-4 days, fever, chills,swollen glands etc. Then you can be tested for the antibody for the virus 6 months after the initial infection.

If your friend is concerned that he or she has been exposed I would suggest contacting the nearest public hospital. (if the exposure has been in the last 24 hours go to the ER now!) They will probably have the resources to place him/her on a prophylactic cocktail if there is still time. At the very least they will be able to connect you to local clinics(public and private) who will be able to give you appropriate testing and advice.
