I have heard about HIV window period. After blood transfusion a relative of mine is showing some HIV symptoms

What is HIV window period? Can I have more information on the chances of contracting HIV infections after blood transfusion?

You should be aware that there are very strict guidelines for testing blood at the blood bank before it reaches the patient. With todays laws, it would be impossible to contract HIV from a blood transfusion. I would say the red cross would have information on this. Also, you could search for the nation wide laws on blood bank proceedures.

But, if the person is that concerned, they should be checked now, and then 6 months later.

For a suspected acute exposure to HIV, one should get tested immediately and then 6 months later. The screening test looks for antibodies against HIV so it can take some time to develop these is sufficient number to get an accurate test so it is best to wait 6 months.

It would be very unlikely in todays time to get HIV from a blood transfusion. It would be more likely that your relative has something else and is just anxious about having HIV.

What are these HIV symptoms?

First of all lemme tell you that every person undergoing blood transfusion will not end up contracting HIV.So,Please ask your relative not to worry.
Now coming to the point, HIV window period is usually 3 months. In medicine, the window period for a test designed to detect a specific disease (particularly infectious disease) is the time between first infection and when the test can detect that infection. You can go through a guide, which I thought was very informative on HIV symptoms,HIV treatment so on and so forth.Download it at http://www.helpcure.com/hiv/

This is a very novel question.Very few people are aware of the HIV window period. The HIV window period is usually 3 months for most people. A patient usually develops HIV antibodies 4-12 weeks after exposure, but not all. 99% of all patients will develop antibodies at 3 months. Very rarely does the HIV window period last up to six months. The HIV window period to wait to be sure is therefore about 6 months.

You cannot, in the US or most other developed countries, contract HIV from a blood transfusion.

But as for your question about the window period, most people who are infected will test positive at the 6 week mark, however, it is recommended to test up to 12 weeks after exposure.
