Is oral thrush an indicator of HIV?

First off the bat, I want to apologize if a similar question has been asked already I have flicked through a few pages and not been able to find any.

I have a white-ish - sometimes yellow coating on my tongue with red bumps that look like swollen taste buds towards the back of my tongue - the coating is kinda like powder when i scrap it off -

It does not seem to be responding to my attempts at treatment - Nystatin suspension, good oral hygiene etc.

I understand that this can be considered a possible defining symptom of HIV/AIDS??

As I surf through the net I become more alarmed - I may have also had OHL 6 months ago.

I went to the AIDS foundation in NZ which provides a rapid point of care antibody test from unigold - this came back negative.

Some infomation on this test would be awesome, as it seems a bit too good to be true - 3 drops of blood 15-20 minutes and WHAM! results.

I would love some ideas/pointers as the anxiety is aw full

Thrush can indicate a compromised immune system and also diabetes. Frequently when you get a yeast infection they can be difficult to get rid of. You will probably need to take lactobacillus acidophillus. This is a wafer chewable OTC with live active cultures (like yogurt but much more concentrated) for a few weeks. Try not to eat sugary foods to help get rid of it.

Thrush in an otherwise healthy adult is one of the first indicators that HIV has progressed to AIDS. But you were tested and it showed negative. The test is about 99% accurate.

Steroids, chemo, diabetes can cause thrush.

Go to the doctor, this might not even be thrush and if it is find out what's wrong. Don't try to cure this yourself. But don't be overly concerned about HIV.

What is OHL?

Oral thrush is more common in people with a compromised immune system. HIV is not the only thing that causes a compromised immune system. Have you been on antibiotics lately?? Certain ones predispose you to oral thrush. What is OHL???

I have an elderly friend who has a serious case of oral thrush (over a year now) and her doctor hasn't been able to cure it. The doctor said it might be caused by her Asthma inhaler (??) Do you use an inhaler???
