Window period for hiv?

is the window period for hiv 12 weeks or three months or is that the same.I got a test done at 10.5 weeks and it came back negative, how accurate is this test and should i go agian?

The vast majority of HIV-positive folks will have detectable levels of anti-HIV antibody in their blood within four to six weeks. Some folks take a bit longer for their immune response to kick in. For this reason, the published guidelines state that HIV antibody tests taken prior to the three-month mark are not definitive or conclusive.

Zini is right, your chances of NOT having the HIV is about 99%.

I was tested at 30 days and again at 60 days by specialist in this field of medicine. Both negative.

You should retest at some time in the near future, especially if you feel like you might have been exposed.

Always use a condom and if you use lube, then make sure it's water-based, like KY. Never use an oil-based lube like Vaseline and it weakens the latex and leads to breakage.

it may take up to 6 months!!. Not 10 weeks.. I would go back in a few months to be sure!!

edit- do not believe that you are completely safe yet. Didn't your doctor tell you to come back 5-6 months?? I know someone who thought they were good and is now responsible for basically killing 2 girls. Those girls are as good as murdered thanx to his lack on information and irresponsibility.

Here is what the CDC says about the window period:

"Antibodies generally appear within three months after infection with HIV, but may take up to six months in some persons."
