Does a ROUTINE blood test detect STD/HIV if they measure White Blood Cells? |
I recently had a blood test for a check-up. Although they did not test for any STDs, they did all the counts for white blood cells, red blood cells, etc. My white blood cell count was normal, does this mean that my body is definetely not fighting any sort of infection (specifically any STDs including HIV). Or could you still have a normal WBC count and still be infected with some STD? I am going to go for routine STD testing soon, but I wanted to ease my mind a little. Sorry, I have no comfort to offer you. A CBC is strictly to count the usual cells, and although it can indicate an infectious process in the body because of a rise in the WBC- it doesn't mean you have a clean bill of health if you are still in normal limits. HPV and Herpes are virus that has to be specifically tested for, and you could also carry chlamydia and have no problems at all. And you could have both syphillis and gonorrhea and not have a remarkable rise in the WBC. I suggest that if you think you had potential exposure, you abstain until after you are tested for STD's and get a clean bill of health. Even after that, it's a very wise man who wears boots to go wading, especially in unknown waters. In the military, most clinics- especially the public health department, will usually give you condoms for free. Even if you have to buy them, it's money well invested. hiv lies dormant for up to 10 years i'm told,so it would take a special test to check for a dormant desease.because white blood cells are only up when fighting something they know is present in the blood....good luck and God bless you |
