What should I expect when going to get tested for HIV?

I talked to my doctor and made an dual appointment for my fiance and I tomorrow night. I'm really nervous about getting tested and I don't really know what to expect (I've been really irresponsible and haven't been checked in 6 years, please, no nagging, I know this was stupid and I'll make a better point to get it done at a yearly physical). I don't remember my previous testing very well and I would just like a reminder of what to expect.

The other users covered every method except for a finger stick. This is another method for rapid testing in which you could get the results in 20 minutes.

First of all, expect all of the usual questions about your life style.ie have you had unprotected sex have you been in prison have you been an IV drug user , have you traveled to Africa,etc... Don't be offended by these questions they are routine and are asked of every one who gets tested. you may if you are a female have to take a pelvic exam. then a blood test and even more questions. DO NOT be afraid! it's OK to have questions. When you see your doctor tell them the truth about everything they might ask, even if it's embarrassing. They are not asking to intimidate you, they need to know these things of they wouldn't ask. Thank you for getting tested!

A common way of testing for HIV now is simply through a q-tip swab taken from the saliva around your gums. The test is done right there at the visit and you get the testing results in 20 minutes.

Since it has been so long since you have been tested, they may opt for some blood drawing to test you for other STD's which can only be tested through blood withdrawl.

I was tested for HIV last year and they performed the Q-tip swab test on me. It's real simple and easy and it's nice to get results back in 20 minutes :-)

They will draw your blood (you should ask to be checked for syphillis too, because a blood test is the only way to be screened for it). They will send your blood off to a testing site; and then will give you the results in 2-4 weeks. Good luck to you both!
