What do they do to test for HIV?

yea so a while ago i was taken advantage of, like 6 years ago, and i was in health last semester and i cant stop thinking about if i have it because the symptoms can show up 10-12 years later..do i just ask my doctor by myself if i dont want my parents to know?
and when i was in 7th grade i took a pee test for a diff infection..would that have shown if i had it?
(i knew the guy who did it to me, i think he was a virgin, not sure on that though..would that mean i couldnt get any std's?)

To get tested for HIV/AIDS the doctor will have to do specific lab work to test for it. All they will do is take a sample of your blood and send off to the lab. The urine test will not test for AIDS. You should get tested even if you think the guy was a virgin just so you will know for sure and have a clear mind and not worry about it anymore. You can go to your family doctor, OB/GYN, or even the local health dept. and the test is completely confidential. Since it has been 6 years ago one test is all you need but if it was a recent sexual encounter then you would get tested then go back in 6 months and get tested again since sometimes the virus does not show up right away but after 6 years the virus will be present so if it is negative then your good to go. Your parents will not need to find out since this is highly confidential but if the test came back saying you had HIV/AIDS then the local Health dept. would step in and get the name of all the people you slept with and contact them (it is the law) so they can get tested.

The symtoms may show up years later but it is always good to check yourself for std's. I think if you were HIV positive they would have told you due to that it is protocal to make sure the person knows about this due to that they can pass it on to other people. This insurest that the patient is know of the condition and will take certain precautions.
I am sure if you tell your doctor about the situation, he or she will work with you, about checking yourself and not telling your parents.
My best suggestion would be that check yourself again and always remember the number one rule
"always use protection!!!!"

system that recognize invaders like bacteria and viruses and mobilize the body's attempt to fight infection). In the case of HIV, these antibodies cannot fight off the infection, but their presence is used to tell whether a person has HIV in his or her body. In other words, most HIV tests look for the HIV antibodies rather than looking for HIV itself. There are tests that look for HIV's genetic material directly, but these are not in widespread use.

The most common HIV tests use blood to detect HIV infection. Tests using saliva or urine are also available. Some tests take a few days for results, but rapid HIV tests can give results in about 20 minutes. All positive HIV tests must be followed up by another test to confirm the positive result. Results of this confirmatory test can take a few days to a few weeks.

Depending on how old you are, you can get tested without your parents permission. Good Luck!!!!

Amy-

You could go to a STD clinic or an AIDS Service organization that does HIV testing. Depending where you go it would either be a blood draw or a simple swab over your gums. As stated a rapid test will give you results in20 minutes or less (depends on the test, the clinic I work in the test only takes 10 minutes)

Either organization will go the testing and usually it's free, call first, ask questions, if there is a cost, if it's rapid testing and if not what is the turn around time for results.

Testing for HIV is a very specific test and you need to sign a consent for for the testing.

Good Luck!
