What are the chances of getting HIV by giving oral to an HIV+ male?

Mature answers only please..

Last summer I gave head for the first time to a guy (just wanted to experiment a bit..haven't since) but I gave him head two different times. Both times he did not ejaculate, theres no questions about that. But I just found out today that he was diagnosed with HIV last august (I probably gave the oral in July or august of that summer). I am freaking out because I have had a g/f for the past year and want to make sure we are both safe. I am definitely going to go get tested within the next week but what are the chances that I could have contracted the virus??

No one will be able to give you an exact risk assessment as there are a variety of factors that can both increase and reduce the likelihood of HIV transmission...factors which can't be individually measured

I can say that oral sex is a very low risk when compared to unprotected vaginal or anal sex, or sharing needles. While ejaculation isn't required 100% for transmission to occur, the absence of taking ejaculate into the mouth definitely reduces the chances of infection.

Kristen is correct when s/he states that "Even if you were exposed to his precum, AND you had an open sore in your mouth, the chance of transmission is highly unlikely." I would caution you about what s/he said about "HIV syndrome".......
- somewhere between 40-90% of people experience Acute Retroviral Syndrome around 2-6 weeks post-infection. Most of these people experience very minor and non-specific symptoms -- symptoms that point to multiple causes.
-you cannot rely on experiencing these symptoms as an indicator of HIV status....
-the main symptoms are swollen lymph nodes, fever and rash, possibly in conjunction with one or more of the following:
muscle aches
sore throat
mouth/genital ulcers
diarrhea
weight loss
headache
thrush
nausea/vomiting

-not everyone experiences all of these, in fact most won't.

Bottom line, you need to be tested as this is a possible exposure, but the odds are in your favour that you are fine. You should be sure and practice safer sex until you know your HIV status definitively.

First, to ease your mind get a HIV test done. You are past the window period and that will let you know where you stand.

To move this to a much more personal level, as a HIV Educator/Trainer who is in a relationship with a HIV+ partner after 11 years I am still negative and condoms are not used for oral.

As others have said there is a risk, but it is not what it had been thought to be in the past. But get tested and go from there.

Good Luck-

Depends on whether bodily fluids were exchanged. I guess you know what that means. Did you share anything else with him (like needles etc). I would suggest that you get that test done, just for the sake of your own peace of mind.

HIV is not as infectious as some other viral diseases. If you have sex with someone with HIV and are exposed to the virus, it does not necessarily mean that you will become HIV positive. Not every incidence of HIV exposure leads to the transmission of HIV. In fact very few do.

There are no exact figures for how often HIV transmission occurs when a person is exposed to HIV. Some research indicates that the likelihood of HIV transmission when a negative man is exposed to HIV by getting ****** by an HIV positive man without using a condom is around 3%. The likelihood of exposure resulting in transmission as a result of oral sex is much lower.
Hope this helps. Good Luck!!!!

Honestly, slim to none. If he didn't ejaculate, the virus probably never even showed its nasty little glycoprotein-covered head. Even if you were exposed to his precum, AND you had an open sore in your mouth, the chance of transmission is highly unlikely. As bloodborne pathogens go, HIV is definitely one of the *least* virulent (...they don't teach *that* in sex ed... instead, they stick to exaggerated forms of the truth to scare us into becoming married, priests, or nuns....ha)

Also, if you never experienced the tell-tale "HIV Syndrome" that is caused as the virus replicates and courses thru the lymphatic system, you for sure shouldn't worry. But in case you're still worried, here are some common manifestations: symptoms usually start between 2 and 6 weeks after the exposure, and last for 2 weeks to a month. They include....
swollen lymph nodes, sore throat, fatigue, rash, joint pain, weight loss, nausea, mouth ulcers(often multiple), vomiting, diarrhea, fever, .... believe me, you would *know* if you had it, it isn't subtle...

Hope this gives you some peace of mind, I know how it feels to be worried about these things.
