How accurate is an HIV test 14-19 days from exposure?

I know I need to get a test again in 3 months but the one I took just now was negative. Is that good news?

HIV can lay dormant in the body and for this reason generally the all clear is not given till 6 months after exposure. In some countries it is three months, in the UK it is 6 months. This test you took would not necessarily be accurate.

According to CDC guidelines for testing.....not very accurate

Here is what the CDC says about the window period:

"Antibodies generally appear within three months after infection with HIV, but may take up to six months in some persons."

This CDC definition of a three to six month window period has been commonly used for a number of years.

It can take 3 months, or in very rare cases, up to 6 months, for antibodies to show up in a test. A test 14-19 days after exposure may not be very accurate.
