How long after being infected with HIV can it be detected in a blood test?

does the HIV virus stay dorment or not

Terry, An infection with HIV can take six weeks for detection. At 90 days, 95% will be positive. At 6 months, 99% will be positive. Initially the virus may not be dormant but it may be undetectable until there is enough to test positive. An HIV infection, even if positive, may not develop into open, clinical AIDS for a couple of years. When treated well, the virus may disappear from the blood and be undetectable or "dormant" while it waits in body tissue for the person's immune system to weaken enough to allow the virus to begin to grow again.

Initial testing for HIV is designed to detect antibodies to the virus. More than 98% of people who have HIV will produce enough antibodies to HIV to be detected on tests within 3 months of the time they got infected. In very rare cases, it could take up to 6 months for someone to test positive.

The virus is never dormant, but it could be several years before symptoms show up. It is important to remember that once someone is infected, they can infect other people, even if they themselves have no symptoms and do not yet test positive.

HIV will show up on testing between 30 and 90 days of infection. 90% will show up after 30 days, 99.6 after 90 days. There are a few who take longer than 3 months, but not many. HIV does not stay dormant, but if a person does not test, it can take 10-12 years to have any reaction to an illness that could raise a red flag. If you are interested in testing go to to find a location near you.

HIV can be detected in the human body anywhere from 2 wks - 6 months after being infected with the virus. As symptoms are very simular to a cold, many peoples think its excatly that-a cold. This is Y 50% of all new infections are spread from those that DO NOT know their status. So someone could go on for yrs before being tested for the virus & all the while the virus spreads...we need to test EVERYONE if we are to get a hold of this deadly virus. PS.HAART meds can now extand life from 5 - 25 yrs after infection. This doesn't mean its cured,as u should practice safe sex always if u R poz, also there R legal ramifications of u do NOT disclose your status.Would you disclose Yours if u were turned down everytime?
