Is it true that if you are HIV positive cervical smear tests are likely to come back abnormal? |
I am a little worried about having contracted hiv after having unprotected sex with a man i barely knew at a party when i was drunk (I took an HIV test three days ago at my doctors and am now waiting for the results). I have read that hiv positive women are 10 times more likely to have abnormal smear test results and I wondered if this was true? (as my smears have always come back fine so am hoping this is a good sign). Also - does anyone know how quickly labs test blood? would they have tested mine on the day it reached the lab? My doctor said I would hear straight away if my test was positive and it's now been 3 days but I don't know if they will have tested it yet. I live in London, UK. Well when you have an abnormal pap smear it's because the cells of the cervix are abnormal for some reason. I don't think HIV causes the cells of the cervix to be abnormal but you should talk to your gyno about that. Also it takes HIV at least 6 months to show up in your body , so your tests could show negative right now. You should have another tests by 6 moths from the time you had sexual contact. Lab tests aren't that quick, they don't test your blood right when it gets there because there are usually other people's test ahead of yours. But it shouldn't be longer than a week |
