What were the risks of contracting HIV? (Help me please)?

Hi all, I had protected sex with a prostitue a "week ago (Latest)" (:( Temptations). I am in Vietnam.
I used condom for vaginal sex and didnt use a condom when I received oral sex.
i have banged many prostitues before Aug 2008 mark (I always use condoms).

Suddenly since the last bang I just thought about why I do these things, life is wonderful, just hold on and not to fall for tempations.

Now today (After a week after the recent bang) i went for an HIV test. It was negative. I am aware of the window period (1-3 months). Now this negative result means that all the bangs I had before 2008 Aug were safe.

I am now only worried about the recent bang which I had week agot (maybe 1st Feb 2009).

I am worried alot and this is now in my head. I can't sleep. I feel why I did unwanted things (though I used condoms). Life is wonderful and it is not something to take risks and destroy. What are the chances of I getting hiv?

I have no symptoms or anything just one lymph swollen lypmh node on my left armpit. actually the size of it is less than the size of a pea. I have a "slight" sore throat feeling and nothing else just i feel little temperature. Also I am aware that sometimes a person get NO Symptoms. Hiv is one hell of a kind, a master of trickery.

I never had sex without a condom. Also I am circumcised (since small very age)!

What are the chances of I getting hiv? Be honest, no stories to comfort me please. Since we cannot depend on symptoms and etc, lets try base on the statistical values. (Even if it is 1:1000000, that 1 could be me.) anyway please answer. Thank you. I will never have sex again except with wife in future. I promise. I learnt my lesson.

as long as you used condoms and they did not have tears in them its 99% you are safe but the only 100% is abstinence. I am sorry to be negative but I doubt you will be able to stop so be sure to cover it up

hope std counselor can solve your question

Can't give you a statistical answer, but I can at least try and ease your mind. The chances of a man catching HIV from a woman is much lower than a woman catching it from a man. If you're circumcised it's even harder for you to contract it, doesn't make it impossible so still, always use a condom.

In order for you to catch it through Oral sex, the giver would have to have lesions within her mouth. I would say the chances of you contracting it are very slim, but of course not 0.

Antibody tests may give false negative (no antibodies were detected despite HIV being present) results during the window period, an interval of three weeks to six months between the time of HIV infection and the production of measurable antibodies to HIV seroconversion. Most people develop detectable antibodies approximately 30 days after infection, although some seroconvert later. The vast majority of people (99%) have detectable antibodies by three months after HIV infection; a six-month window is extremely rare with modern antibody testing. During the window period, an infected person can transmit HIV to others although their HIV infection may not be detectable with an antibody test. Antiretroviral therapy during the window period can delay the formation of antibodies and extend the window period beyond 12 months.. This was not the case with patients that underwent treatment with post exposure prophylaxis (PEP). Those patients must take ELISA tests at various intervals after the usual 28 day course of treatment, sometimes extending outside of the conservative window period of 6 months. Antibody tests may also yield false negative results in patients with X-linked agammaglobulinemia; other diagnostic tests should be used in such patients.

Three instances of delayed HIV seroconversion occurring in health-care workers have been reported; in these instances, the health-care workers tested negative for HIV antibodies greater than 6 months postexposure but were seropositive within 12 months after the exposure. DNA sequencing confirmed the source of infection in one instance. Two of the delayed seroconversions were associated with simultaneous exposure to hepatitis C virus (HCV). In one case, co-infection was associated with a rapidly fatal HCV disease course; however, it is not known whether HCV directly influences the risk for or course of HIV infection or is a marker for other exposure-related factors.

So....use condom and do the tests and remember - condoms also break sometimes, so dont spend (waste) your time (life) with prostitutes... ;)

Please consider the followings:

1) Your vaginal sex was protected. Condoms work. You did not have a risk of contracting HIV is condom did not break and remain intact.

2) Chance of contracting HIV from a single episode of unprotected oral sex is around 1 in 10000. Some experts even believe that this is not a risk. In any way, the risk is very low

3) It is very unlikely that your partner had HIV. HIV remains a rare disease even among prostitutes.

4) Symptoms are NEVER indicators for HIV infection because they are not HIV specific.

5) Test after 1 week is not a good indicator. Only about 50% of infected people test positive by this time. You need at least 6-8 weeks after exposure.

To summarize, and being honest, you did not have a significant risk of HIV. I suggest you choose your partners wisely from now on. Ask questions before having sex. Ask about the HIV/STD status. And keep up the good work of using condoms.
