I have a question about HIV Question? |
Hi All, Mom's are regularly tested for HIV when they are pregnant but babies aren't tested regularly...Im wondering why this baby was tested. There must have been a risk factor, meaning that there was some kind of risk that the baby could have been infected. I am wondering if the mom hasn't already tested positive and that is the reason the baby was tested. The rate of transmittion from HIV+parent to baby is about 25%, so 1 out of 4 times does the HIV transmit to baby. BUT when the mother takes HIV anti-retroviral medicines DURING her pregnancy, that rate goes down below 5%. No it does not mean that parents are negative. A woman with HIV can have a baby that does not have it as long as the birth is done right. Testing should be accurate for everyone, no matter the age. |
