Blood transfusion and HIV? |
I understand that the window period for HIV to show up in any test is between 3 - 6 months. What happens if a person who is in this window period donates blood will it be detected by the blood bank or can it be passed to a patient ? If passed to a patient will the pateint suffer from HIV ? The blood banks do two different types of test for HIV. One is for antibodies and there is a window period for that and the other is nucleic acid testing for viral particles that is done in order to detect HIV during this window period. Yes the blood banks will will detect it. This coupled with the history (asking questions) makes the blood relatively safe. The estimated incidence of transmission is one in a million to one in two million. Nobody receives a million units in there lifetime and so the chances are so remote that it isn't really that significant. The chances of hepatitis are more probable but also low at present. Actually the window period for HIV is longer than that..And if the person knows that they have HIV then they should not donate in the first place, but no, sometimes it isn't detected by the blood bank and can very well be passed to a patient. If the blood is infected and the donor knows or even thinks it is, they probably shouldn't donate. No...You cant say definitely... surely yes |
