Can a hiv test be a false positive?

i was tested pos in 1994. i was tested again last week and there is no sign of the virus. I have been living as i was pos. so, am i now.

It depends on what you mean by "no sign of the virus".

This sounds like the result of a Viral Load test, rather than a test to see if you have HIV. Viral Load tests measure how much virus there is in your blood, not whether it is there or not.

Having so little HIV in your blood that it doesn't show up on a viral load test is common if you are having antiretroviral treatment, and some people with HIV can have such extremely low levels even without treatment for many years. However, they are still infected with HIV: it's just that their immune system (or the medication) is keeping the infection under control for now.

You should discuss with your doctor exactly what "no sign of the virus" means in your case.

Just because there isn't any sign of the virus doesn't mean you still don't have it. It could just be undetectable in your system right now. I'd talk to a doctor and get another test. It is possible to get a false positive on an HIV test, though.

False positives are possible. Have another test done. Tell your MD about the the test in 1994. The testing is much better now, but talk to your MD. Better safe than sorry, and peace of mind is awesome.
