How long after you ave sex can you test positive for HIV ?

My borther tested + on 06/05/09 and I need info.I love him and wast to be there for him. So anyone that can help I would very much appreciate it.

I'm sorry about your brother.

More than 98% of people test positive within 3 months after getting infected. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to test positive after getting infected. The problem is that many people don't get tested as soon after possible exposure as they should, mainly because of denial of risk and lack of symptoms. Depending on his behavior, it may not be possible to tell how long ago your brother was infected.

The sooner after infection that it is diagnosed, the better. Your brother needs to see a specialist and follow the specialist's advice about treatment. There is no cure, but with current treatment, many people with HIV are living longer, healthier lives.

HIV is not transmitted by saliva or casual contact. You can touch, hug, or even kiss your brother without getting infected. You can also share plates, dishes, drinking glasses, and clothing with no risk.

If you have any other questions, please email me through my YA Profile page.

They recommend testing at 3 months and 6 months after potential exposure because it can often take that long for the virus to show up in high enough quantities to be detected by a test.

Make sure you use a condom every time you have sex from now on. Even if you don't have enough virus to test positive just yet, you could still spread it to others.

3 months is the maximum people still say 6 months but that really only counts for people that have cancer or another serious illness that has destroyed the immune system already. The cdc website states the majority of people will test positive within the first 6 weeks

approx 3 months. test are straight forward. results back within two weeks.

in most cases 3 months. by then the hormones will be enough to be detected

I takes about a month or six months. I have a co-worker who has it.
