Who should take an STD or HIV test? |
I'm 48 I'm new to dating scene after being married for 13 yrs, then in r'ship for 2 yrs, now 5 yrs abstinant. How should prospective partners be screened to determine if testing is necessary? Anyone who is sexually active should have a STD exam before starting a new sexual relationship. That way, both parties know that the other was "clean" before the start of the relationship. But, be aware there are some things a STD exam will not show, the biggest of which is Herpes. Herpes is very hard to detect if it is not currently active. And there is no test for it b/c any Herpes type of illness will come back positive. Some common Herpes illnesses most of us have are cold sores, chicken pox, shingles, and mono. So, open conversation with your partner is still one of the better conversations. If your partner is not willing to talk about it, don't sleep with them. This is no game and needs to be taken seriously. Truthfully~~assume ALL PARTNERS are HIV and STD + until proven otherwise. Use condoms til you know for sure. Better safe than sorry these days. I think both should take HIV/ STD tests. It's fair and it shows you have nothing to hide. It ain't fair for one partner to and not the other because they may think you're hiding something or may have something. Always good to be as safe as possible, especially this day in age!!!! i am married and have had less than 5 partners in my lifetime but i still get it checked anytime i do my yearly check i get tested everytime i go for my yearly exam. i am married but i had my share of relationships before i was married and they say diseases like aids can take up to 7 years to show up. i do it just as a precaution |
