How long after having sex a person should get the test done for HIV ?

How long should a person wait to do the test for HIV after having unprotected sex ? some people say that if it is done within three months, it would not be detected even if the person is +ve. Are there any tests that tell you the actual results quicker ? Please help

My understanding is that it takes a few months for HIV to begin replicating itself and making enough copies to be detected by the test. Six months was the magical number I used to hear but that may have changed.

If you're worried about it, you could visit your local health clinic and speak with them and ask about your options. If you know a person is HIV + and you had unprotected sex, you can start taking prophylactic medications NOW instead of waiting for a test. The medications will need to be taken for 6 months to a year depending on the medication used and they will test you to determine if you did contract the virus.

Please note, the sooner you take the med (knowing the person was definitely HIV+) the better your outcome will be.

you can get one now but it may nt show as it can take up 2 six months to show signs , so i would get one then 2.

Your should talk to your doctor about taking HIV anti-viral meds.

You didn't say if condoms were used. If you did there is NOTHING to worry about. If not, get an HIV test ASAP. This would be a base line. HIV's window pwroid is 90 days. It usually shows up 90% of the time at 30 days, 94-96 at 60 days, and 99.6% after 90 days.
