Is the PPD test really an HIV test?

Is the PPD test really an HIV test?

No - it's a tuberculosis test.

No, it's a skin test that indicates whether you have been exposed to tuberculosis or not. PPD stands for Purified Protein Derivative. Has nothing to do with HIV.

No, just as the others replied, it is a TB test. It is a skin test used to determine whether you have been exposed to TB or not. Also, although it may come up positive, it does not mean that you have TB, it could merely mean that you have been exposed. No. They have nothing to do with each other.

A PPD is a test used to see if a person has been exposed to tuberculosis, a contagious respiratory disease. If a person has a positive PPD, it does NOT mean that they have TB. It means that at some point, they were exposed to it (this is very common among healthcare workers).

Further testing would be needed to determine the type of TB a person is infected with so that proper therapy can be initiated.

An HIV test is most commonly a blood test (there is an oral swab that can be used too). TB is NOT an STD. It is, however, very contagious and there is no vaccine for it. Fortunately, most people who are exposed do not develop it.

EMT
