Is it standard procedure to test for HIV before surgery? |
I recently had surgery and remember having blood drawn prior to the procedure. I would like to know what tests were done and the results of those tests. I know I can get them from the hospital, but does anyone know what they test for and whether this includes HIV and other diseases? Would they have informed me if I had tested positive for anything bad? No it is not routine to test for HIV. They should inform you what they are testing for and why. They should contact you if anything was abnormal. Be proactive with your health and simply ask for the results and to be tested for HIV if you like. There are places you can be tested for HIV anonymously if you choose, or confidentially so it is NOT in your medical record. In most hospitals they tell you what they're testing for and if they don't, you should ask them. If they did test for HIV and if that test was positive they are required by law to tell you. They may not have tested though, I think they have to tell you they are testing you, but I really don't know for sure. |
