Do they test for HIV when you give blood? |
I gave blood a while back, and I noticed that, in addition to the blood you donate, they fill a small vial with it. It would only make sense for them to test for HIV, etc. in donations to avoid passing diseases on to other people. But would they also notify the donor if he/she had HIV or another disease? Yes, they test it for HIV, hepatitis, etc. and will notify you if there is a problem. yes they test it long before it goes to another person.. and yes they will contact you if something shows up.. They test it for a range of diseases as well as HIV. If they found any problems, they would definitely notify you. Yes they do. I don't know how long ago you gave blood, but they (or at least Red Cross) send a letter thanking you for donating blood. I remember when I first got the letter from Red Cross a few weeks after the first time I gave blood, when I saw the envelope from the Red Cross in the mail, my heart went to my feet and I thought there must be bad news about my blood test results. But it was just a thank you letter. Same thing happened to my old bf. (My avatar is a guy but I am actually a woman in real life). So anyway, don't panic if you see a letter from the organization you gave blood to. It's probably just an acknowledgement. Definitely. HIV transmission through donated blood used to be a big problem. They don't take that risk anymore. They also check for many other diseases, such as hepatitis and STDs, and make sure there is enough iron in your blood and no unwanted antibodies. |
