Indeterminate HIV test?

I'm confused by a test result- I received an indeterminate test 3 months ago, and another this past week. The only risk factor I have had was two years ago I had mutual oral with a male, I finished (unprotected in his mouth) and he finished on my chest. (no sores or cuts on me). What is my risk on this? I thought I was safe. I also thought 6 months is the window to get a positve. Do i consider myself clear? It's been two years I would hope something would have shown by now. I do not know his status either.

That's a difficult situation and very stressful. What does your doctor tell you to do?

An indeterminate/inconclusive result means that the antibody test was neither positive nor negative. This may be a result of:
-Recent HIV infection,
-Prior blood transfusions, even with non-HIV infected blood,
-Prior or current infection with syphilis, malaria, or other viruses,
-An autoimmune disease such as lupus or diabetes,
-Being a recipient of an experimental HIV vaccine,
-Or problems with the test procedure itself, such as contamination of the blood sample.

If a person has an indeterminate HIV test result, the test should be repeated. If the test results continue to be indeterminate, there are other tests that may be done to detect an infection.

indeterminate is not negative or positive you may not have enough HIV in your system to test positive or there was a problem with the test. The only thing you can do is get retested. Talk with your doctor. You may have to wait 3 months to get retested, to get a more accurate result or to make sure if you have it that you get enough in your system. but do not have sexual contact with anyone and make sure if you cut yourself to make sure no one comes in contact with your blood or bodily fluids till you get your retested results back. Go talk to your doctor and get retested. Best of luck

The window period is now 3 months. There could be other things going on in your body to give an indeterminate test result. Medications that you might be on could do this. You might want to ask for a Western Blot to be done. That is the confirmatory testing for HIV.

Good Luck.
