Hiv-1 test?

for the fist time i just got my test and hiv-1/2 says nonreactive and hiv-1 says indeterminate and on the right side of the same line it says negative. I ask the doctor and he said its not sure so making me take another test. And on the bottome it had this writing. "indeterminate for the detection of hiv-1 antibodies. It is recommended that the patient be tested at three months to six months. ( interpretive criteria:cdc, mmwr, 1989 what is all mean i just dont get it? my guess is that i cought the hiv or maybe i'm wrong can anybody give me on quick info?

Some tests do not have absolute "Positive" and "Negative" results.

There is a "grey zone" where an accurate determination cannot be made. That's all the test means. It does not mean that you are 'slightly positive' it means that the results achieved could not be determined to be either positive or negative.

The lab tests we produce ususally put the expected or reference result(s) to the right of the test result. Docs usually know the proper result, however laboratory accreditation rules require that the information be provided so that an accurate understanding of the result is achieved.

I've had indeterminate results occur; many times a repeat tests shows a clear negative. Sometimes, the result is positive on the second test.

Remember too that these tests are screening tests and can produce a false positive result. A definitive test (Western Blot) must be performed (and performed correctly I might add) to confirm a screening test.

Screening tests are designed so that false negatives are never an allowable result, however false positives are tolerated because a confirmation test must be performed to validate the screening test result.

Hope this helps.
