Is HIV testing part of the blood test done before elective surgery?

I had breast implants put in about a year ago, and they did a blood work up on me before I got them.
I am was filling out some insurance forms and they ask when I was last tested for HIV. I would think that the surgeon would want to know if they were working on an HIV+ patient, but can't find out any info.

Does anyone know?

You do sign a consent before you get your blood tested. I signed several.

As to universal precautions, I was more thinking that it would be done for the safety of a potentially immuno-compromised patient then the safety of the medical team.

Thank you for your answers :)

they CAN test you during that time, but its not stardard procedure. your best bet is to talk to your healthcare providor about what tests were run, or to request one at the time of your other testing.

In order to test for HIV status, you would have to sign a consent form. Since all patients are to be handled with universal precautions, then the fact that you were HIV + or not wouldn't really make a difference to the way you were treated in or out of surgery.

No, HIV testing is not part of the pre-op work up prior to surgery. You would need to make an appointment with your doctor to discuss your concern and then sign a consent form for the test.
