How long to i have to wait for HIV test?

how long do you have to wait after having sex to take HIV test.
any doctor in here? i hear it wont show instantly after you get it. you have to wait some time before you take a test. how long?

3 to 6 months, you can go in 3 months and then go back in 6 months to be sure
