If i take a hiv test does that pick up aids too? if i test negative past 20 months for hiv does that mean that i dont have aids?

HIV Causes AIDS, if you're clear of HIV chances are you are clear of AIDS as well.

Uh yea..lol...you have to have HIV before it progresses to AIDS. Quit fooling around, and you won't have to worry about stuff like this.

The answer to the question you actually asked is yes.
The answer to the question I think you meant to ask is maybe.
Let me explain...

HIV is not a disease, it is a virus. There is something called Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). This is the 'disease'. People who become infected with HIV generally develop AIDS after some time (usually, years). This occurs as HIV targets and destroys your immune system. AIDS is when your immune system is very weak due to a long standing HIV infection. You then tend to get many different types of infections, and have trouble getting rid of them.

The HIV test used initially is an ELISA test. This test looks for antibodies. The test is considered not valid if you have had potential exposure within the 'window period'. This is the time frame (generally agreed to be 3 months, less than 1% of the time it could be longer) that it takes for your body to make antibodies to the virus. If you have tested negative for 20 months, and not had any possible exposure (unprotected sex, needle sharing, etc), then you can say you are HIV negative. If you are HIV negative, it is impossible for you to have AIDS.

Now, for the question you might have meant to ask...

If you test HIV negative, does that really mean you are HIV negative? (Which would mean, not on the progression to AIDS)

Answer: Maybe. Again, if you have had a possible exposure within three months of your last test date, it is possible you are HIV positive, even though the test shows a negative.

Can someone test positive on an ELISA test, and really be negative?
Answer: Rarely.
Sometimes an ELISA can be positive (those in the testing field call an ELISA positive 'preliminary positive') due to factors such as other infections, or an influenza vaccination. For this reason, an HIV positive status is never diagnosed without a confirmatory test called 'Western Blot'. If someone tests positive on an ELISA, it is extremely likely they are positive, but not for sure. If someone tests positive on both ELISA and Western Blot, that is considered essentially 100% accurate.

It means that you do not have HIV...the virus that CAUSES AIDS.

Be advised that many people who have tested positive for HIV do NOT have AIDS. AIDS typically develops over time in an HIV infected person. Once a person who has HIV develops AIDS, their health deteriorates very quickly. However, thanks to newer and better medications, people who are HIV positive are living much longer, healthier lives and going MUCH longer before developing AIDS.
