Accuracy of HIV test?

My last unprotected sexual encounter was in May 2007. I got tested for HIV last month, Feb. 2008, and the test was negative. Is that an accurate result or should I go get tested again in another 3 months?

My answer would depend on the type of testing you got. If you had the rapid oral test for HIV antibodies, that could be less accurate and I would recommend getting tested again just for your peace of mind. If you had the blood test, that would be very very accurate and you would not need to be tested again unless you engage in high-risk behavior again. It can take 3 months from the time of exposure until the HIV shows up on a test. If it has been more than 3 months and you're negative, then you will still be negative.

Yes, the test is accurate and getting tested again in 3 months is an excellent idea.

The level of accuracy depends somewhat on what test was performed on you, but assuming it is one of the popular tests like OraQuick or OraSure, it is anywhere from 99.6% to 99.9% accurate.

If you are concerned about the tiny chance that the test may have been inaccurate, I agree that you should take another one just for the peace of mind. If you engage in unprotected sex regularly, you should make it a habit to get tested not only for HIV but for host of other STDs, most of which can be treated quickly and painlessly if caught early.

if your last risk behavior was truely nearly a year ago the february test should be accurate. they suggest testing twice with six months in between because it ussually takes 3-6 months after exposure to have enough antibodies present to be detectable.

As long as your test was 6 months after your sexual encounter, and it was negative, you are considered to be HIV negative.

ou are in good shape. Testing is 99.6% accurate. There is no need to retest. The window period is 90 days and you are well past that time.
