NAT testing vs. regular HIV test? |
I was just wondering what was better, the nucleic acid test or the usual HIV test you get from seeing a doctor. The only thing i know about the NAT test is that it shortens the window period, but how accurate is it? From what I've read, the NAT test is used to directly test for the virus as opposed to the usual HIV test, which tests for antibodies. The usual test has a window period of 3-6 months to account for the time it takes the antibodies to appear in the blood. The NAT test is shorter and more accurate (at least if testing before the antibody window period). See link for more details. |
