Hiv test ?

can someone please explain to me what is the HIV NAAT test and how is it different from the standard hiv test ? how much sooner does the naat test dectect hiv from the regular test ?

HIV NAAT Test is NOT an FDA-approved method of testing for the presence of HIV infection. these types of tests detect the genetic material (RNA) of the virus rather than antibodies to HIV. Therefore, viral load tests can reveal HIV infection during the weeks before antibodies are produced.

HIV NAAT tests (aka viral load, PCR, RNA tests), instead of looking for antibodies that a person produces in response to HIV that the standard test looks for, detect the genetic material (RNA) of the virus.

They are not useful in screening for HIV, as they are EXTREMELY sensitive (which is more likely to produce false positives than with standard HIV antibody screening [ELISA with confirmatory Western Blot]), they are also very expensive, and require people trained in performing and interpreting the results (results are not cut and dry).

NAAT tests are useful in other areas of HIV care however.
