HIV Transmission - Can it spread like this?

Does HIV Virus dies in water
If water mixed with HIV Infected semen touches any fresh cut on the body , can it infect the person

Dear Stelly
Actually , it so happened that the person was washing hands in the washbasin in a toilet & water splashed out on my face , which was having an open cut
Although I am not sure that he had any semen / blood on his hand & more importantly , whether it was infected

The first answer is TOTALLY wrong. The virus does not thrive well outside the body but it does not die immediately. Your question is interesting, because doctors usually say by the time the fluid starts to dry the virus is dead, but in your case it wouldn't start to dry, although the water would kill it I assume. If it is a pool or hot tub? they both have chemicals which will shorten the life. It survives only a few minutes outside the body.

YES a person can be infected by a cut in the skin but HIV is not very infectous and the odds would be very great to be infected in such a manner.

It can be transmitted other ways besides intercourse, it travels on a protein found in bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluid, blood, breast milk and other bodily fluids, in some cases HIV has also been found in saliva, sweat, urine and tear drops. You have to have Protein to protein contact for it to be spread such as semen in an open cut. If ANY bodily fluid is contaminated with blood, infection is a risk. HIV MUST get into your blood stream in order to become infected.

No since the virus dies outside of the air.

No, as soon as it hits the air, it dies immediately. The virus can not survive outside the body. That is why it can be transmitted through intercourse, it goes from one body directly to another.

To the answerer below: I stand corrected - there are certain conditions where this virus can survive - see below

HIV is sensitive to fluctuations in temperature and the presence of oxygen. One place that HIV has been know to survive in is drug injection syringes since these are airtight and often contain blood from the injector.
