Why do people fear HIV?

I supose its is a comparable death sentence to terminal cancer. It will kill you within 10 years or so.

Our cave dwelling ancestors were very promiscuous and they were not aware about the transmission of STDs. There must have been fatal STDs back in their time and that they have aquired imunity then eventually and pass it to us. Maybe HIV is just part of our evolution.

Since it is incureable, and you will have to live with it until you die.

HIV was not present until the 1950's, although is was discovered and diagnosed in the 70's and 80's. HIV is not part of OUR evolution because it came from chimpanzees and sooty mangabey monkeys. HIV-1 came from chimps, HIV-2 from the sooty mangabey, and yes, most people do not realize that there ARE two types of HIV, although HIV-1 is found almost everywhere, while HIV-2 is primarily in West Africa. HIV is scary because while there are medications to treat it, they are extremely expensive and have horrible side effects. Also, there is no cure or vaccine available for HIV or AIDS, so once you have it, you have it for good (unless a cure is discovered).

And no, it actually doesn't kill you "within 10 years" it can be less, it can be more, some people have lived 25+ years with HIV without developing AIDS.

People don't die from HIV. If someone has HIV, it does not mean they will die within 10 years. HIV is the virus that causes AIDS. If someone gets HIV, it might not develop into AIDS. If it does, people don't die from AIDS. They die as a result of other diseases they get once AIDS attacks their immune system, making it impossible for their body to fight back.

People fear HIV out of ignorance and fear. There are so many people that are stuck with "things" they have hear or been told and can't move past the information they have. There is new information all the time about HIV. The ways you become infected are unprotected insertive intercourse and sharing dirty or used needles by people who do injection drugs.

HIV is found in blood, vaginal fluid,semen and breast milk. The only one that can become infected by breast milk is the baby that a HIV+ mom was feeding as the baby's immune system is under developed. There is not enough HIV to infect a male partner.

As a trainer/educator I am still surprised by people that think you can get HIV from kissing, eating of the same plate, drinking from the same glass= just to name a few.

"People fear that in which they do not understand." That always comes to mind whenever I talk about the stigma that surrounds HIV/AIDS. It is my opinion that it is all about a lack of education on the subject.

10 years? In the late 80's 10 years was the norm. That was before we knew anything about the disease, before we had the drugs for HIV. However, today a person who is HIV positive can live a normal lifespan.
