How easily can HIV be transmitted?

I know that it's only transmitted through intimate or blood contact etc, I've done a little bit of research on the disease.

What I'm curious about is... if A has unprotected sex with B, and B is HIV positive, what is the likelihood of transmission? Meaning, is it inevitable that A will contract HIV or does it depend on the viral load, amount of bodily fluids exchanged and other factors?

Basically if you have sex with someone who has HIV would you definitely contract the disease...?

No.

HIV transmission is not 100% for ANY activity. And there are so many independent variables that increase/decrease your risk that it is impossible to give an accurate answer.

sharing IV needles with an infected partner is the most risky,

unprotected anal sex (transmission can occur with just one exposure, but in the majority of cases, HIV transmission doesn't happen every time)

unprotected vaginal sex (transmission can occur with just one exposure, but in the majority of cases, HIV transmission doesn't happen every time)

But you are right, some of the factors include:
-infected person's viral load
-amount of body fluids/HIV exchanged
-which body fluid was exchanged
-gender of partner/type of sex
-the presence of a STI in the anogenital or oral region drastically increases risk of transmission (majority of which cause no symptoms)
-genetics of the uninfected person

So, you will not " definitely contract HIV" if you have unprotected sex with an infected partner, but it could happen on the very first exposure. So be aware of the risks!

ps. If people later on post about specific risks like ....this kind of sex is 1/300 or 1/500, please ignore. Those stats were not meant to be used in this general way and can leave people with a false sense of security if they read these in the wrong context..

I understand you want to know it in % chances. But tell me, what lowest can make you sure to risk that, considering there is no definite treatment yet discovered. This makes the question irrelevant.
Best is to protect yourself, forget what already happened.
Be careful in the future.
I hope it makes sense.
Good luck!

good questions all

That is a very loose based question. But someone having sex unprotected with a positive partner is considered at high risk for contracting the disease. If it's two males and the recieving is negative, chances are high. If one is giving to a male that is positive, chances are still there but lower than before. For male-female it's a bit different. A male having sex with a female that is infected is still a lower chance. My wording is probably a bit off so check out the CDC webstie below that gives you some concrete info on how it is transmitted, via sex or drugs etcs. Overall, I think the main point is having unprotected sex is never safe, no matter what one's status is. Only if you have been with one person for some months and know each of you are faithful is it then considered safe- but that is with the greates trust that has been built. Best wishes =0)
