Why do so many people consider AIDS/HIV to be a gay disease when:?

The World Health Organization reports that heterosexual contact is responsible for over 70% of all AIDS/HIV cases world wide?

According to CDC statistics (July, 1997) heterosexual sex is the fastest growing mode of transmission for HIV in the United States - growing at a rate of 15 to 20 percent a year, compared to 5 percent for intravenous drug users and 5 percent for male homosexuals.

Lesbians remain the least likely group of people to acquire HIV through sexual contact.

Because they prefer to perpetuate bigoted stereotypes, rather than concentrate on the facts.

Be honest, the last time you met a truly ignorant bigot, how swayed were they by reality and evidence?

p.s. to Wadd - pleas stop spreading the lie that HIV does not cause AIDS. Thousands of scientists disagree with you, and they have evidence on their side. What do you have?

HMMMMM? Where are all those gay bashers now? Why are they not reading this. Oh becuase they're stubborn, and they don't want to know facts. They would rather post their own opinions on here instead of actual facts.

It's because they stereotype. They don't look at facts but instead use their imagination.

First of all anytime I come into this category I make it known that I'm straight OK? And what I want to say regarding this question is that whomever is still believing this bullsh!t should be shot with sh!t and killed for stinking! It also means that they are either not up on the recent current events or they're the walking dead and should just be covered with dirt!

Because, like Wide Awake stated, they continue to perpetuate the bigoted stereotypes.

If you look in the bible, there are many examples of plagues. For all intents and purposes, HIV/AIDS is a plague. It's alot easier to scape goat such things like plagues to people deemed unacceptable in the eyes of the bible (despite how blind it really is). Many christians don't want to believe it is a global problem and it even effects "the flocks of faith"...so...they have to blame it on someone. Think of Jerry Falwell blaming 9/11 on EVERYONE except Christians. Same thing.

Have you heard of the Down Low (DL), in the closet, etc? I believe that many, many, many men/women pretend to be straight, but to look straight they sleep with heterosexuals of the opposite sex. But I do not know if I believe AIDS/HIV originated through gay people. I do believe that they are at a higher risk because anal sex is high risk, and I have found many gay people, not all but many, sleep around consistently.

AIDS/HIV is a worldwide epidemic that effects children, straight, gay, and in between. The cure, abstinence until marriage, straight marriage that is!

I've seen a heterosexual woman die of AIDS. People make jokes but it is so NOT FUNNY. She was a heroine addict that got her life together but it was too late. She left 3 kids & 5 grandchildren behind.

I am straight, but I think because Americans like to place the blame on whoever they can. It really doesn't anymore who brought the disease or what group has it more. People we should be focusing more on how to find a cure for a virus.

CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG!

geeezzzzz

Trolls and bigots are allergic to facts.

i have no idea.anyone that is smart knows the virus first came from monkeys(poor poor monkeys)*cries*

I didn't know people still refered to AIDS and HIV as the gay disease. That's what it originally started out as, but I think whoever refers that still as the gay disease is just ignorant.

Likely because the rate of infection amongst gay males is much higher than that of the general population

"In June 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 120,223 (includes only those cases in areas that have confidential HIV reporting) in the United States are HIV-positive, and 311,701 are living with AIDS (includes only those cases where vital status is known). Of these patients, 44% are gay or bisexual men, 20% are heterosexual intravenous drug users, and 17% are women."

44% of HIV/AIDS cases are gay men, and gay men are 2-6% of the population. That's an alarmingly high rate of infection, and the likely reason it's thought of as a "gay disease."

It has to do with when it came to North America. The gay pride movement had gained steam, and people were coming out of the closet in droves. These people were also happy to be free, and decided to enjoy sex, without condoms, because you cannot get pregnant with gay sex.

Now the disease wasn't super sudden, you could have it for months before your health was bad enough that you'd notice, while the whole time you'd be spreading it. There was no testing, or treatment, they didn't know what hit them until it was too late.

I assume most heterosexuals were at the time still very much married at an early age, whereas now they're more sexually promiscuous. So it spread primarily through gay culture of the time, and that's what got press.

So, the current view of HIV/AIDS as a gay disease comes from that. However it is outdated and has been for some time.

The stigma needs to be removed, because a lot of heterosexuals are at risk now, and it's scary. The lack of ads to remind people to wear a rubber is problematic. A lot of that funding went into abstainance funding when the Bush administration overhauled sex ed funding.

It is sad that nowadays it's a hetero disease. It's right scary, especially since there's less incentives to get tested if you're hetero, which can mean a large number of people could have it and not know until they've spread it far and wide.

Okay I'm done now.

Read the updated CDC material. over 50% of new cases in the United States are attributed to homosexual activities. That means that a new wave of homosexual infections has occured in the last few years. This is the 21st century, i suggest you get some updated information, not some stuff thats over 10 years old.

I don't know, but a straight guy had sex with a monkey(I think the monkey had AIDS/HIV) and then had sex with a girl and thats how it got started.

because it gets spread easiest through sodomy if no condome is used.

This is true only if you include Africa. Within the US, AIDS is still a disease that effects gay men and drug users.

misleading...iam open to any sexuality and HIV and Aids is sexual orientation disease based on how many tricks you get
and your tricks pass on what you had

some tricks are bi and some are free orientation... thats how straights get it...

the reason why to spill the pandoras box is...heteralsexual rate is high because of bi sexual tricks

gay people dont get it most and thus the infection spread rate is extremely low...

the CDC is misleading the gay community and try to blend
all sex is our sex thats a bunch of misinformation

IN england HIV DOES NOT CAUSE AIDS AND HUMAN TESTING OF 10 YEAR STUDY PROVES IT

LETS PROTEST TO THE CDC TO HURRY UP WITH THE HIV VACCINE ALL STRAIGHT AND GAY INSTEAD OF DIVIDING THE ISSUE
