AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is caused by a virus known as HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). HIV causes AIDS by attacking T cells, a type of lymphocyte, in the bloodstream. The T cells are part of our immune system and are necessary for strong defense against disease. When HIV attacks these cells, it weakens our immune system and over time, we become weaker and weaker and more unable to fight off diseases. This condition, known as AIDS, can result in death.

Because it is a gradual process, people can have HIV in their bloodstream for as long as 8 to 10 years before it weakens them enough that they begin to display the symptoms of full-blown AIDS. During this 8 to 10 year period, they appear to be healthy but actually carry HIV in their blood and can infect others through sexual intercourse, which is the only way that the virus can be spread. It can also be spread through infected needles used by drug addicts or through improperly sterilized dental tools. AIDS has also been spread through transfusions of blood contaminated with HIV. Strangely enough, blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes do not carry or transmit the disease. There are now simple blood tests available that can test for the presence of HIV in the bloodstream. Also, in recent years, new drugs have been developed that greatly prolong the life of a person with HIV/AIDS and can reduce it to a manageable chronic disease. There are now people who are alive and healthy after 20 years of being HIV positive. Although these are great breakthroughs and represent tremendous progress, there is still no known cure for AIDS.

In order to protect oneself from AIDS it is very important to use condoms, either male or female condoms or both. For treatment of AIDS, there are both allopathic and holistic medicines available, although the holistic ones are better used in conjunction with the allopathic ones. None of these treatments cures AIDS. They do reduce symptoms, however, and weaken the virus and reduce its numbers in the body.
