What treatments are there for AIDs? What are scientists saying about "cures" in the near future?

Do you think they will EVER find a cure for AIDs/HIV??

There primary treatment for HIV/AIDS is known as HAART which stands for highly active anti-retroviral therapy. HIV is a retrovirus and the medications that are used to treat it block further replication of the virus in the cell or interfere with its lifecycle in some other way.

The major classes of drugs that are in use today include NRTIs, nNRTIs, and protease inhibitors. The problem is that these drugs arent perfect and that as HIV replicates it makes mistakes so the new HIV virus may not be as susceptible to the drug. There are two new classes of drugs that are going through phase III trials now which present new targets but they are still not a cure.

The problem with a cure for HIV is that the cells where HIV lives may live on in the body for a very long time. While most of the cells that are infected are T-helper cells, there are a few that are T-memory cells. These cells may not die for many years, so even if you get rid of all the virus, it is still living on in these cells.

At the moment, there is no known cure.
